EEG-EMG-Sleep Medicine

EEG - Used in the diagnosis of seizures but also in the older patient with memory loss suspected of Alzheimer’s dementia or after vascular injury.

EMG and Nerve Conduction Studies - For  the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome or radiculopathy requiring pre or post- surgical investigation; sensory loss and numbness in diabetes and other metabolic disorders; or traumatic nerve injuries.

Evoked Potentials - These are studies of the optic nerves, auditory pathways and sensory systems.  Useful for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis or vague pain syndromes in which neuro-imaging has not demonstrated any anatomic lesions.  Often when MRI fails to show the problem, evoked potentials will highlight functional and anatomic difficulties which only become apparent on MRI much later, when it is often too late to intervene effectively.
